Biltong Box Building Instructions

Here it is, a fine example of a Biltong Box.  Hopefully these videos help you build your own.

Measurements:

2 x 610mm x 610mm (back and front)
2 x 610mm x 320mm (sides)
2 x 610mm x 302mm (inset top and bottom, since they are inset the width of the wood must be deducted from 320mm.  The wood is 9mm thick)

Part 1 - Building the Biltong Box basic structure.

Part 2 - Finishing the Biltong Box with ventilation, lighting etc.

  3. Hi Clinton, thanks for the instructions. I'm wondering whether it would make any difference, having seeing that you have built a small and then a bigger box, if we were to make the air vents on the smaller one halfway up the box so that the meet is dried more in the centre rather than them at the bottom; would that make the drying process more efficient or not? Have you noticed a difference compared with your designs between the two? Thanks bro!

    1. Dave, I actually woke up this morning and started thinking of my next Biltong box. Since I moved country recently I left the big Biltong box behind so need to do new one.

The airflow needs to be controlled as the more air in a particular section the faster that Biltong dries. I added extra air vents on the larger Biltong box (bottom and middle) to get more air to the top row. The only challenge that box presented was faster drying near the bulbs and it was not the air flow.

Keep in mind air will follow the path of least resistance, too many holes and you may bypass the meat somewhat. Try and get as much air flowing over the entire batch of Biltong as possible.

Hope that helps, if you come up with a winner design let us all know please.

      Cheers

  5. (Just posted this comment in the page for the really big biltong box by mistake but it really belongs here!)

Just about to make a biltong box but I am making a minor adjustment, by using a 100w ceramic heat bulb instead of a light bulb. i bought this one: AC 220-240V 100W Ceramic Emitter Heater Pet Reptile Heat Lamp Bulb Black

Will let you know how it goes!
